Holiday Head and Body Games – Getting it Right

26 November
Monday, 26 November 2012 06:46 Written by admin 0 Comments

It’s that time of the year again. The time when the lists come out telling us what to do to avoid the 5-10-pound weight gain that frequently occurs as a result of the many upcoming holiday festivities.

Rather than recycling the numerous articles on this topic, I have a different approach that you may wish to consider. If you wish to read the nuts and bolts and dietary do’s and don’ts, I would recommend that you consult the University of Google. Otherwise, I invite you to consider some of the thoughts below as options for maintaining your health over the upcoming holiday season.

In all matters of health, the body follows the mind. One of the most important considerations in maintaining health is winning the mental battle that occurs with each passing breath. We must ask ourselves one question, will this activity I am about to engage in make me more healthy or less healthy? The answer to this simple question immediately clarifies the path that we should follow. The nature and history of mankind has primarily been a response to short-term stimuli with a less well-developed sense of long-term planning. What feels good in the moment, may not feel so good if repeated numerous times over a lengthy period (leading to chronic degenerative disease – or weight gain over the holidays).

It is not a foregone conclusion that we must gain weight over the next two months. It is just traditionally accepted that that is what typically occurs. Decide today what your weight will be January 1, 2013. Write that number on a card and stick it on your refrigerator or other high traffic area. Every decision over the next two months will either lead you closer to or further from this number. It is nice to keep this number in mind as you navigate the many sumptuous holiday land mines ahead. This is not asking that you completely deprive yourself of occasional indulgences. It is just worthwhile to be conscious of where your decisions and choices may lead you.

Decide ahead of time where you will fail (because we all do in some way or another)
and decide what your answer will be if tempted by those meaning well and offering goodies. Planning and preparation are of paramount importance if health is to be maintained and improved over the holidays. If you are aware of the obstacles you may face, it is much easier to deal with them. Deciding beforehand makes the choice easy (no, I have decided I will not have seconds of that wonderful desert). Forethought pays off if the tough choices are already made before the situation even arises. No need to stress over an answer in each case – who needs more stress over the holidays?

Eliminate guilt, recrimination and self-flagellation.
If you fail in your efforts to stay on track – so what? Recognize that you stumbled, pick yourself up and vow to get back to the plan you had created for yourself in the first place. There is no success in beating yourself up over a misstep, only to fall back into the trap of what you were trying to avoid in the first place. Life happens and it is the resilience one demonstrates that will lead to success long term. If we quit every time we stumble, we’ll never reach our goals. It is the constant quest for self improvement that enables us to reach the summit.

To avoid the health challenges of the next few months, create a strong mental template of how you will navigate the abundance, prior to being placed in a difficult position. If you create the mental template of where you will be on Jan. 1, 2013, your actions and behavior will follow your thoughts. It is not just calories in and calories out and more likely should be thoughts in, actions out. Good luck as you navigate and move through the holidays and we’ll see the improved you when the new year starts.

13 Simple Tips for Cancer Prevention. This is not all inclusive but some of the things I know will go a long way in helping one prevent cancer. I’m just putting this out there for general information and there are many other options. Keep learning. Follow these at your own risk (medical disclaimer).

1. Vitamin D – maintain a level of 50-70ng/ml, which typically requires a dose of 5,000-8,000iu/day of Vitamin D3, but it is necessary to check levels.

2. Cruciferous Veggies – broccoli, kale, collards, cabbage, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts – as much as you can stand. This is strongly anticancer.

3. Curcumin – Life Extension brand 1 capsule 2X/day – http://www.lef.org

4. Iodine – Iodoral 12.5mg/day for 2-3 months and then 2-3X/week. More info at www.breastcancerchoices.org

5. Exercise – walk at least 30 minutes, 6 days/week. More exercise if possible, including weight lifting. This simple action cuts cancer recurrence in half.

6. Say GOODBYE to sugar. Eliminate sugar as much as possible. Restrict intake and be conscious of hidden sugar. Don’t beat yourself up if you have some, but limit as much as possible.

7. Medicinal mushrooms -  Coriolus Versicolor and Agaricus Blazei – 2 capsules each 2X/day on an empty stomach – Mushroom Science has the best product.

8. Garlic/Onions – as much as you can stand – raw the best – hide the cloves of garlic in salad/vegetables

9. Fiber – the more the better – Metamucil daily if not enough via diet

10. Green Tea – consume as much as you can and frequently

11. Fish oil – Cinnamon tingle Cod Liver oil 5-10 cc’s/day -www.greenpasture.org

12. Probiotics or fermented food – make your own sauerkraut, Kim chi or kombucha. www.perfectpickler.com

13. Quality Multi/B Vitamin Complex – Best B complex out there for estrogen metabolism - http://www.seekinghealth.com/homocysteine-formula-homocystex-plus.html

All of the above will improve your terrain and diminish tumor development or growth. Provide excellent information for your genes to follow and they will protect you.

Tweaked Bulletproof Coffee

Frequently, I am asked what I eat in a typical day. One topic that generates a great deal of interest is my daily consumption of Tweaked Bulletproof Coffee, the concept of which I learned from Dave Asprey on his site, http://www.bulletproofexec.com/coffee/. I call my version the Tweaked version because I have taken Dave’s original recipe and added a few tweaks to further increase the nutritive value and benefit of this outstanding beverage.

Research has validated the numerous health benefits of coffee consumption. The New England Journal of Medicine recently published a 13 year observational study with over 400,000 people correlating the health benefits of coffee consumption and its role in longevity and disease prevention. Basically, those who consume coffee on a regular basis are less likely to die from several common health conditions, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and infection.

Aging Well: A Guide to Optimal Aging

Over the past month I’ve spent a good amount of time assembling a talk on Aging and how to best approach it. We all have our own philosophy on what we feel is best for us and this talk evaluates what the science says about the steps we can take to optimize our journey on the path of life.

I would like to invite you spend a little time to watch and learn what steps you can take now to ensure that there will be more life in your years rather then just more years in your life. Knowing that we control our destiny and carrying that mentality serves one well over the long term. It is the choices we make today that will determine our path in the future. The sooner we learn this, the sooner we will take the necessary steps to do the right things for ourselves.

Rather then writing up the whole talk I would like to suggest some major points to consider:

- Control your systemic Inflammation and Insulin

Don’t Eat Meat – It Will Kill You!

Sunday, 18 March 2012 02:28 Written by admin 0 Comments

This is what we learned this past week, after the article, Red Meat Consumption and Mortality was published in Archives of Internal Medicine. The true title of the article should have been, Inactivity, Excess Drinking, Excess Smoking, Obesity and Excess Red Meat Consumption May be Associated with Increased Mortality. This is what the recent study truly demonstrated, but much of this was lost in the brief title ascribed to the study. Nutritional studies like this come along all of the time, further adding to the confusion about what we should and should not be eating. When we follow the dietary mantra recommended by the media, more often then not, we end up sicker and less healthy

In the hustle and bustle world we live in, we’re always looking for the most bang for our buck. When it comes to our health, it is no different. We all want to know what we can do that will provide the most benefit for the least amount of effort/time/cost. There are so many recommendations and paths to follow out there that we’ll often just throw our hands up in the air and never make the little changes that are necessary to live our optimal life.

I recently discovered the attached video and was so impressed with its message that I thought you too would appreciate and benefit from this valuble information,

Cholesterol and Statins – The Good, the Bad, The TRUTH

-It is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows – Epictetus

Cholesterol – a substance that we are all familiar with as a major risk factor for heart disease, or not? The allegation of cholesterol as an evil villain has been preached to us on numerous occasions over the past 50 years. The evidence directly implicating cholesterol as a major cause of heart disease, when critically examined, does not stand up to scrutiny. This Lipid/Cholesterol hypothesis is a faulty dictum brought to us primarily by Ancel Keys, PhD., in the early 1950’s and has been propagated ever since. Many studies have demonstrated no statistically significant correlation

Healthy Whole Grains – Part 2

After last week’s post, I fully intended to move on to another topic but with the interest generated and comments raised, I thought I would share another link with a great deal of information concerning the genetic roots for proper dietary advice.

Cutting through all of the “expert” dietary information and taking a 100,000 foot view rather than a 10 foot view, I would like for you to consider the volume of information available connecting proper dietary habits with the genetic record. This is not exclusively about grains alone, but about what we should be consuming in general to have an optimal diet.

Healthy Whole Grains – Not!

This post was initially intended to be sent out to a patient of mine, then I thought of another, then another who needs to hear this and before I knew it, I realized, everyone needs to know this information. The information I am sharing is about the detrimental effect the consumption of wheat has on our body.

I do not accept the concept of “healthy whole grains” that has been pounded into our minds over the years. These grains (particularly wheat) are in no way similar to what they were prior to man “improving” upon them via genetic engineering and hybridization. As we have worked to improve crop yield by altering wheat, we have never looked at the effects this has had on the composition of wheat and the effect these changes has had on our body.

It’s 2012, Eat Like A Caveman

It’s that time of the year. The time when we all decide we’re going to be healthy and eat better. The question that frequently arises is, what is the best diet for me to follow? The answer to this question has been so varied and changed so frequently over the years that it’s no wonder we all suffer from analysis paralysis when trying to decide what we should be putting into our mouths. We have been influenced by nutritional researchers, our doctors and our government and look at the sad state we’re currently in. Let’s try empiric logic and attempt to discover what we should be eating based on what our genes dictate. We couldn’t do any worse.

The new diet I am recommending is actually 60,000-100,000 years old.

I would like to take a moment to make you aware of a company that I recently discovered that can make healthy living a little more affordable. Something I think we all could benefit from.

The company is The Green PolkaDot Box – http://www.greenpolkadotbox.com/rewardsref/index/refer/id/11894/

This is a new company that significantly reduces the cost of organic and non-GMO products, so as to make them more affordable to those who otherwise may find the pricing on these products out of reach.

Ignore This At Your Own Peril

How’s that for an attention grabbing headline? The topic I’m discussing today is one that you may be growing weary of hearing as I continue to beat this drum. This message is so important that I can’t help but continue to emphasize it. The topic is the significant importance of our dietary choices and our overall health and well-being. As the American diet has continued to evolve (or devolve), we continue to grow more ill as a nation. Universal healthcare may become less necessary if we only received proper dietary guidance (from our Government and other sources) and actually followed that guidance.

Keeping Away The Winter Blues

23 December
Friday, 23 December 2011 22:25 Written by admin 0 Comments

Poof, the holiday season is upon us! This is supposed to be the time of year to be merry and full of good cheer, but many of us tend to feel downright dull and depressed instead.

Twenty-five percent of the population suffers from a significant drop in mood and energy during the winter, often known as the “winter blues.” Of those suffering with the winter blues, more than 20 percent develop seasonal depression, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Common symptoms of SAD include weight gain, lethargy, fatigue, irritability and decreased sociability.

Stop Eating Your Inflammation

One of the common statements I make to those trying to discover the key to health, wellness and disease prevention is: If you want to live a long, healthy life, you need to learn to master and control your insulin levels and your level of chronic, systemic inflammation.

People are often surprised when they hear me mention inflammation as a factor in disease because they think of the common, everyday, acute inflammation that one typically treats with ice or with the use of anti-inflammatory drugs.

Basically, there are two types of inflammation. Though they’re related, their effects and importance for your health are drastically different.

Dietary Recommendations and the Truth

I am writing about the topic covered in this weeks newsletter because I feel the importance of this information cannot be overlooked. I am always looking for more information on the relationship between diet and health and this relationship is discussed/summarized quite well in the attachments below. I previously had sent out a newsletter about the failed lipid hypothesis and the information provided here is a further extension of that topic. The lecture linked by Dr. Donald Miller Jr. was presented about 3 months ago.

I cringe whenever I hear the term “artery-clogging saturated fat” (as if to distinguish that from regular saturated fat), when the evidence to support that notion is

A Passion for Poop

I was fortunate to meet and attend a lecture this past week by Wesley Jones, M.D. Dr. Jones is a gastroenterologist and a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association. Dr. Jones has more than 30 years of clinical experience and is author of the book Cure Constipation Now, I thought I would share with you some of the useful highlights and insights I have learned that may help you too.

America is a constipated nation. Studies demonstrate that the average GI transit time in America (from when we eat to when we eliminate) is 4 days. In countries where they eat a less processed, more whole foods based diet (less developed countries), transit time is generally 1 day. We are not talking constipation, as in, I only go once every four days. This is constipation, as in, I’m not eliminating the food I ingest quickly enough and because of that, it ferments and rots in my gut.

Sunshine on My Shoulders, in a Healthy, Responsible Way

06 October
Thursday, 06 October 2011 22:02 Written by admin 0 Comments

John Denver had it right many years ago when he sang: “Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy.” Denver was way ahead of his time, as much of the research data demonstrating the depression-alleviating effects of sunshine (vitamin D) had not yet been published. The many benefits of vitamin D are coming to light, and it seems that daily, there is more research validating the importance of having an optimal vitamin D level.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is produced naturally in human skin that has been exposed to Ultraviolet B light from the sun. Though labeled a vitamin, D is actually very similar to a hormone in the way it is synthesized and utilized. Vitamin D is made in/by the body from cholesterol and cholesterol lowering drugs are frequently associated with low vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D has many health benefits. Here’s a Letterman-style top 10 list. These benefits are not necessarily in order of importance:

1. Vitamin D supplementation can be free. Just 15-20 minutes per day of sun exposure on untanned skin, longer if you have darker skin. It is important to avoid sunburn in the process, and individual exposure time will vary based on skin tone.

2. Vitamin D is anti-cancer. There are numerous studies showing that optimal vitamin D levels decrease the risk of up to 20 major cancers. You might stay out of the sun, thinking you are preventing skin cancer (and you may be of some types), but you’re also putting yourself at risk for many other common cancers by not optimizing your level. Do you want to lower your risk of breast cancer? Get out and get some sun exposure!

3. Vitamin D is good for the heart. Studies show that low levels of D increase the risk of heart attack 2.4 times compared to optimal levels. Men have 6 times the risk and women 3 times the risk of high blood pressure with suboptimal D levels.

Here is a link to an interesting documentary on the status of our food, our health and an alternate way to consider how we deal with the food we eat daily.

This is a free viewing of the movie Food Matters and is worth the time to watch. The movie points out a number of deficiencies in our system and encourages us to take action to improve our diet in an effort to improve our health.

Take a look and take in some of the information offered. You won’t be sorry.

Iodine – Protector of Everything

19 September
Monday, 19 September 2011 13:16 Written by admin 0 Comments

Iodine is a frequently overlooked mineral with a significant number of protective benefits and features. Iodine is most commonly found near the sea and is abundant in sea vegetables, seaweed and to some degree fish. The most common source of iodine in the American diet is iodized salt and recent studies of our salt supply demonstrate inadequate fortification. Since many of us shun salt or use sea salt, we often find ourselves deficient in this key nutrient. As a matter of fact, fully 96% of the American population (or at least the number of people who have taken a 24 hour urine iodine test) come up as deficient when it comes to iodine sufficiency.

Iodine deficiency is the most common cause of mental retardation in the world. Soil that is deficient in iodine (such as in the goiter belt of the Great Lakes) is a cause of many diseases. Hypothyroidism, fibrocystic breast disease, polycystic ovaries (just about any cystic disease for that matter) and breast cancer are all some of diseases that are frequently associated with iodine deficiency. Breast cancer is seen more frequently when one is in an iodine deficient state. This is why there is an association between

Choose Health: The Power of One

07 September
Wednesday, 07 September 2011 06:26 Written by admin 0 Comments

Each day, as we go about our busy lives, we spend more time paying less attention to some of the things that should matter the most. Over the past 50 years, our personal and national health has deteriorated at what seems to be an ever increasing rate. The Lancet, a medical journal, recently reported that over half of the U.S. adult population will be obese by the year 2030.

The prognosis for America’s future health does not look good. In an effort to combat this situation and to provide tools that can help you face the future, I will be writing a column to guide you on the path to better health. We are where we are now for numerous reasons and the problems we face are multi-faceted. The current health crisis in America is not due solely to gluttony and sloth. It goes much deeper than that. I hope to explore some of these issues and outline practical solutions for you in the months ahead.

A significant contributor to the many chronic diseases we face today has a great deal to do with the standard American diet (SAD diet!). If a terrorist wished to slowly and secretly undermine the foundation of America, he simply need open another fast food restaurant, serving toxic, nutrient-depleted food.
